– for better protection of Arctic nature
An industrial society with a full range of modern conveniences and comforts will naturally generate more types of refuse than a traditional hunter culture. At the same time, the low temperatures in Arctic regions make it difficult or even impossible to break down certain waste substances.
In the field of the environment, GIC and ARTEK will work to help promote ideas intended to:
• reduce the emission of environmentally hazardous substances into nature
• recycle certain types of refuse for other useful purposes
• use available knowledge about environmentally sound components and processes as the basis for starting a commercial project
Examples of what GIC and ARTEK are already working on – or have worked with – in the area of the environment include
• waste water purification
• cleaning soil polluted by oil
• removing heavy metals from fly ash
